Unrealistic Writing Goals

On the eve of my planning day for 2016, or what’s left of it, I went over my writing goals and found they were way off.

Long Term Goals Unrealistic!

First of all, I planned to complete first drafts of two memoirs by December 31. Here is what really happened.

  1. The Wedding in Spain did not come together because the theme would not surface, even after I engaged a professional to look it over.

  2. The Monks in a Monastery memoir had privacy issues for me and the true life characters, especially after seeing Spotlight 3 times.

  3. I had my first grandchild, Ms. Elodie of Brooklyn, and most of my time has been spent making faces and goo-goo gahing into Facetime and checking Facebook eighteen times a day, looking for any new pics of her.

  4. I organized a major writing conference for women for October and I am only now crawling out of the event planning exhaustion of that it.

Clearly, I do not know how to schedule my life’s activities.

The two memoirs have been shelved until I can figure out what to do with them. I lost momentum and desire to continue. I would not, however, trade one second of the two years of writing and editing experience I gained from writing those rough drafts. But I have to face that my goal setting was unrealistic. But who knows when the desire will return, and I will full charge ahead on one or the other?

Weekly Goals Nonexistent

I forgot weekly goals altogether. Next time.

Daily Goals Not a Good Fit

My daily goals did not fit me. They were too ridged for my random work style. So daily goals will be revised to fit my kooky work habits.

Some Success on Monthly Goals

My monthly goal was to complete ten short pieces for publication. I have ten I can work with.Hurrah!

And one is published. Hip Hip Hooray!

But I hit a snag. I could not for the life of me make the ten I wrote match what the online or offline publications were looking for. Some might fit if revised. And that’s where I’m at – revising - and writing new ones to fit the markets.

The nice thing is, I have two months left to complete that goal. May not be ten published pieces but more than one. Please wish me luck on this goal.

What I’m trying to say is, in January, 2017 I need to review my goals setting skills.

LIVE AND LEARN, I heard someone say.
