HI! I'm Back!

Exactly six months ago, I left you to write a book. Here’s what happened.

January- March – I worked on a second draft of my memoir Seven Days in Spain.

April I took a break from the second draft because I stopped going anywhere with it. In addition, a pitch doctor told me it would be better as a novel. I have never written a novel. Back to Square One.

I entered the Erma Bombeck Writers Competition with a piece about my colonoscopy alternative. I did not win the competition but you can read “The Pooper Alternative” here.

I attended the three-day Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop in Dayton, Ohio – Erma’s college home. What a whirlwind. I loved rubbing elbows with the likes of Allia Nolan, John Grogan of Marley and Me fame and Dinty W. Moore. Women stand-up comedians and workshop leaders blew us away with their ideas and performances.

May I came back from the EBWW thinking I would be inspired to carry on with my work with great gusto. Not so. I lost all ability to write. I read books. I thought. I avoided all creative work. I was surprised to discover that spending time with established artists shut me down. I will write about it in “They Took Me Out of My Comfort Zone” which will be my blog post for July 8. Watch for it.

June I headed for New York to read picture books to my grandchildren and enjoy the splash pool at Prospect Park, chill out with my daughters and their partners, eat really good food and leave all this trauma behind.

July This blog post is my attempt to push myself back into the writing life. I’m thinking writing anything is better than writing nothing. Do you agree?
