Five Messages of Love

Any day is a good day to say I love you but wow, do I love those Valentine candies and hearts. Must be a throwback to second grade when Kenny M. professed his love for me with a kick in the shin and a paper heart.

Thursday is Valentines Day. I know many have become jaded about this day designed to show love to a best girl or guy or others. Many argue it’s too commercial. Well, every holiday in this country is too commercial – birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas and Hanukkah as well as other celebrations. They’re often all about candy, gifts, and flowers – not necessarily love. But here’s the thing. It doesn’t have to be that way. We can make it a day to make someone feel special, as long as we don’t forget the other 364 days.

Here are five ways we can honor our best loves with heartfelt messages of affection:

1. Tell Mom you love her and are dreaming of her home-made soup on this cold February day.

(Or her pot roast or her tacos – if she’s in Florida, call out her key lime pie)

2. Remind Dad of the time he carried you all the way to the local clinic when you broke your leg. And then bought you a bright red lollipop to take the pain away.

3. Hug your husband, wife or significant other and just say, “You mean so much to me.”

4. Get down on the floor and play with your child, your dog, your cat, or your pet tiger for one hour – making up for those busy days when each had to go it alone.

5. Call on a friend who needs encouragement. Say something happy, warm or funny. Don’t leave until you see a smile on their face. (It is the age of FaceTime, you know.)

Be encouraged to make a love difference out there this week where so much unlove fills the airwaves.
